When we brainstorm, we engage in a process of generating ideas, solutions, or concepts through free-flowing and spontaneous discussion.
Brainstorming is a powerful technique for generating creative ideas and solving problems collaboratively. When two people engage in brainstorming, they can combine their perspectives, knowledge, and creativity to generate an innovative solutions synergy.
ConvoActive host Kevin uses a common approach to brainstorming known as 'mind mapping'.
Mind Mapping:
Mind mapping is a visual brainstorming technique that helps organize thoughts and explore different facets of a problem. When two people create a mind map together, they can build upon each other’s ideas. Here’s how:
Materials Needed: Zoom whiteboard. Don't worry if you're unfamiliar with Zoom whiteboard host Kevin will show you how to use it...it's easy to use. You can also go to 'How To Use Zoom Whiteboard' to see the instructions.
Central Question: Start with a central question or problem statement. For example, “How can we improve our customer response times?” How, What, Why, When, Where,
Create Bubbles: Write down related thoughts or ideas around the central question, each in a separate bubble. These bubbles represent different aspects or potential solutions.
Connect Ideas: Use lines, arrows, and circles to connect related ideas. As you discuss, one person’s idea might trigger another person’s insight, leading to new connections.
Explore Further: Keep adding bubbles and connecting lines. Don’t worry if it looks messy—that’s part of the process.
Evaluate and Select: After brainstorming, review the mind map together. Identify the most promising ideas or solutions.
Mind mapping together allows for visual exploration, stimulates creativity, and ensures that both participants contribute to the map.
Remember, effective brainstorming isn’t just about quantity; it’s about encouraging diverse thinking, active listening, and building upon each other’s ideas. Whether it’s a pair or a larger group, collaborative brainstorming can lead to breakthroughs and innovative solutions! 🌟🧠
Encouraging Creativity: Brainstorming sessions are designed to encourage creative thinking and allow participants to think outside the box.
No Judgement: During brainstorming, all ideas are welcomed, and no criticism or judgment is allowed. This helps create a safe environment where everyone feels comfortable sharing their thoughts.
Quantity Over Quality: The focus is on generating as many ideas as possible, regardless of how feasible or practical they may seem at the moment.
Building on Ideas: Participants are encouraged to build on each other's ideas, leading to collaborative and innovative solutions.
Varied Perspectives: Including people from different backgrounds and areas of expertise can lead to more diverse and comprehensive ideas.
Documentation: It's important to record all ideas shared during the session for later evaluation and implementation.
As host Kevin says, "Creativity creates more creativity". With that in mind, brainstorming is a creative exercise that boosts your creativity, and boosting your creativity not only makes for better brainstorming sessions but fuels even more creativity.
Creativity is the main solver of problems, maker of solutions, and transformer of what wasn't into what is.
The fact that host Kevin is not familiar with what you want to brainstorm about is actually beneficial.
The sessions should be fun as you and host Kevin quickly volley thoughts back and forth and it's always advisable to record the session for review and even further generation of ideas.
Being more creative can pay off in so many ways as you apply it to your everyday situations, but creativity is like a muscle—it needs regular exercise to stay strong and flexible.
